On July 29, the Dana Point 5th Marine Regiment Support Groups’ benefit at Irvine Imrpov, Operation Semper Funny, was a smash hit for the Marines, sailors and families of the “fighting fifth.”

Terry Rifkin, president of the support group, opened the evening by thanking the community for their generous support.

Former 5th Marine, James P. Connolly, who served in Desert Storm opened the comedy event, followed by Fritz Coleman, known as the “Funny Weatherman.” More than 200 guests with 70 sponsored Marines were in attendance, Rifkin said.

“The young guys were just howling in the audience and it was a pleasure to see them off duty, safe, and having a relaxed time,” Rifkin said. “It was indeed a night of Comedy and Camaraderie.”

Rifkin said, Col. Jason Bohm, commander of the 5th Marines sat a little too close to the stage and Comedian Julie Kidd had her fun with him, but added that Bohm was accustomed to ambushes and unexpected assaults and handled himself well.

All proceeds from the event go on to benefit members of the 5th Marine regiment and their families.
