Interstate 5 at Ortega Highway in San Juan Capistrano will undergo full nighttime closures for three consecutive weekends, according to a construction update from the California Department of Transportation.
The closures will take place on Friday and Saturday nights, between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m., beginning Friday, Feb. 21 until Saturday, March 8.
Northbound and southbound lanes will not be closed simultaneously, according to the update.
The closures are necessary for construction crews to remove falsework from the south half of the Ortega Highway bridge.
The following scheduled closures are in effect, Wednesday, Feb. 5 and Thursday, Feb. 6:
- Northbound and southbound I-5 on- and off-ramps will be closed between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m.
- Northbound and southbound I-5, between Junipero Serra Road and Camino Capistrano, will be closed between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m.
- Eastbound and westbound Ortega Highway, between Rancho Viejo Road and Del Obispo Street, will be closed between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m.
Additionally, Caltrans is scheduled to begin pile driving work in late February on the I-5 southbound off-ramp at Ortega Highway. Residents and nearby businesses are advised that the work may be loud and disruptive due to vibration and pounding. The work is necessary to reconstruct the off-ramp and will last intermittently for about one month.
On Thursday, Jan. 23, construction crews added a second lane to the I-5 southbound off-ramp, approaching the spotlight at the Ortega intersection. The configuration will last about nine months while crews work to reconstruct the ramp and interchange.
The $86.2 million I-5/Ortega Highway interchange project is expected to be completed in the spring of 2015.
