Vol. 1, Issue 1, February 8-14, 2008

THE LATEST: A countywide survey by the Association of Orange County Deputy Sheriffs shows that half of Orange County residents surveyed say the next sheriff should have experience in Orange County, with former San Clemente Police Lt. Bill Hunt—who ran against former Sheriff Michael Carona in the last election—garnering the most support at 15 percent.

And, according to the survey, 70 percent of those asked think whoever is selected as the new Orange County sheriff should “have nothing to do” with Carona, who resigned from his position to fight federal corruption charges. Other candidates considered include Santa Ana Police Chief Paul Walters and Anaheim Deputy Chief Craig Hunter.

The AOCDS commissioned an independent organization, Global Strategy Group, which surveyed 600 registered voters likely to vote in the general election. In the countywide survey that had a confidence level of plus-or-minus 4 percent, released January 28, voters thought immigration was the top issue in Orange County, especially among voters 45 and older.

In a separate Sheriff’s Survey of AOCDS members, released February 4, of 1,140 asked, Hunt had the greatest support at 41.55 percent, followed closely by Paul Waters (40.11 percent) and Jack Anderson (8.94 percent). Anderson is currently serving as interim sheriff. That information will play a role in helping the board decide Carona’s successor.

WHAT’S NEXT: The Orange County Board of Supervisors has launched a national search to find Carona’s replacement. Information from the countywide survey and AOCDS poll will play a role in helping the board decide whom to appoint.
