A 13-year-old girl is in critical condition after she was struck by a vehicle near Mira Costa Park in San Clemente Monday evening.Orange County Fire Authority Public Information Officer Capt. Steve Concialdi said the accident took place just after 6:20 p.m. The girl, who was not wearing a helmet, suffered a severe head injury and was transported to Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo for treatment.
A preliminary investigation found the driver was headed southbound on Camino Mira Costa. The collision took place at the intersection of Plaza Estival.
Concialdi said friends of the girl, who were also skateboarding, witnessed the accident and called 9-1-1. The girl’s mother also arrived at the scene a short time after the accident.
The driver stayed at the scene and rendered aid to the girl, who was identified as a student at Shorecliffs Middle School.
The Orange County Sheriff’s Department Major Accident Reconstruction Team is investigating the incident. No citations were made and alcohol or drugs are not considered a factor in the incident.
Concialdi said the accident was a clear example of why the department strongly encourages the use of a helmet by skateboarders, scooter-riders and bicyclists, especially for the prevention of head injuries.
