At last week’s San Juan Capistrano Parks, Recreation, Senior and Youth Services Commission meeting, the selection of El Camino Real Park, which had been previously approved in December for future skate-friendly development in San Juan Capistrano, was denied 6-1 by the new commission as the potential location for a skatepark. The majority of the new commissioners saw issues with the El Camino Real location due to safety concerns related to the park’s proximity to Camino Capistrano.
Rather than approve the El Camino Real location, many of the commissioners encouraged the youth and community organizers to “go big” and aim for a skatepark in the San Juan Capistrano Sports Park, which is located near the Dana Point/San Juan border next to Marco Forster Middle School and the Boys & Girls Club of Capistrano Valley.
“The fact that they are now reconsidering locating it in the Sports Park on Del Avion puts us back into the game, in that we may now be able to help to finance the skatepark,” Mayor Carlos Olvera told the Dana Point Times Wednesday. “If their City Council approves the location and says it’s a go, we can get together to work on making it a joint venture.”
