On April 11, the crew aboard Dana Wharf Whale Watching vessel San Mateo came upon a giant leatherback turtle in distress.
Crew member Jason Kunewa grabbed his GoPro camera and a knife, jumped into the water and freed the turtle from a mass of kelp tangled around its left flipper and neck.
The turtle was estimated to weigh close to 700 pounds.
