In other great news for the local surf scene, road repairs at San Onofre State Beach are scheduled to begin on March 25. The repairs should take about a week to complete with access being restored by April 1—just in time for spring break.

On Feb. 6, heavy rains overwhelmed the drainage system at San Onofre, causing massive erosion and destruction to the dirt road into the beloved California state park. The damage to the road happened at a stretch just north of the surf spot affectionately known as Four Doors. Access to San Onofre has been severely limited since the road washed out, with only the small, top parking area open to the public – one with room for about 30 vehicles.

The erosion at San Onofre is part of a larger issue, as a new lease agreement for the area continues to be negotiated between the U.S. Military, the State of California, Southern California Edison (which operates the decommissioned San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station), as well as local interest groups that are advocating on a number of issues, including Indigenous rights, environmental concerns and more. The new lease agreement is supposed to be signed at some time in 2024.
