Most popular dish: Fish ‘n’ Chips; Innovative Sushi

Best known for: Salads

With Ostrich burgers to a full sushi menu, Joseph Carabott combines his Australian cooking background with his Japanese culinary skills at his new San Juan Capistrano restaurant in Marbella Plaza. Opening its doors two weeks ago, Aussie Bistro, which Carabott runs with wife, Daniella, has quality, healthy food at an affordable price. “I’m always putting in the personal touch,” he said. “Everything is made from scratch; that includes the burgers, chips (aka fries) and bread.” Carabott’s personal favorite is the Pita Pocket “Sanga” (sandwich), which can be made with prawns, chicken tenders or sirloin tips. “Many women don’t want a heavy sandwich, and this is perfect,” he said. For a bigger appetite, the Innovative Sushi is made with the American eating habit in mind: It’s thicker and has more filling. On the lighter side, there are a variety of salads from the Watercress n’ Spinach to the Surfers Paradise Prawn Salad.
