Mira Colaco, Dana Point
We have lived in California since 1982, and for as long as I can remember, vacation rentals have operated in Dana Point.
Owning a vacation rental here allows us to be close to our grandchildren, otherwise Dana Point would be difficult to afford on a retiree’s income. For a few months a year, we like to travel, and during that period, we like to rent out our condo. Obviously, we are very picky who we rent to because it’s our home and we wouldn’t want it abused.
I’ve read a complaint that living next to a stranger can be difficult. I have a different view: if you take a minute to introduce yourself, you can find yourself with an expanded network of friends from all over the world.
Finally, I don’t think it’s appropriate for three or four elected officials to decide who and when someone can stay in our home. When governments encroach on our property rights, it can lead to a number of negative ramifications long-term.
I know our City Council has been working long and hard on this amendment for a decade. I hope that it will be finalized on Sept. 6.
