Hundreds gathered at Pines Park in Capistrano Beach on Memorial Day to honor the military lives lost in battle. VFW Post 9934 and the City of Dana Point presented the event overlooking the Dana Point coast on Monday, May 27 to pay special recognition to the sacrifices veterans have made.
The program included a “Boots and Rifle” ceremony conducted by officers of Post 9934, and the bugle call, “Taps.” This year, Post 9934 honored all of the women who have served the country, or supported active duty personnel and veterans. Attendees included Dana Point Mayor Joe Muller and City Councilmembers Debra Lewis and Jamey Federico, as well as members of the Marine Corps Air Station from Camp Pendleton and their color guard. The Taps bugle call was played by Master of the Trumpet David Longoria.
At the end of the service, attendees had the opportunity to place a flower at the Fallen Soldier Battle Cross, which is a symbolic makeshift cross comprised of a rifle, helmet and boots. The battlefield cross is meant to honor the life of a soldier killed in the line of duty.
