At the Dec. 11, 2015 meeting of the Hobie Memorial Foundation, Barbara Johannes, Dana Point Historical Society president, presented foundation president, Robbie Roberson with a check for $10,000.
“With this contribution the Historical Society hopes to inspire other individuals, organizations and corporations to pledge a contribution toward the memorial, together with an advance down payment demonstrating their commitment,” Johannes said.
With the late Hobie Alter’s contributions to the city, the foundation considers Dana Point a fitting location for a Hobie Memorial and is working toward bringing the project to fruition.
The memorial, to be designed by artist Lance Jost, will be a bronze sculpture of Hobie sailing a Hobie Cat 14 atop a base of bronze bas reliefs representing his surfing, shaping and skateboarding contributions.
Jost’s existing artwork in the city include mosaics on the pedestrian bridge over Pacific Coast Highway, the art on the Mary Ellen Thomas Memorial Fountain in La Plaza Park.
