As far as rising stars to watch, Dana Point’s Callan Emery is definitely worthy of some attention.
“It seems like every week he’s just getting better and better,” said Eric Diamond, Executive Committee Chairman for the Dana Point Surf Club. “Not only does he continue to improve, but he’s got a great attitude and is an amazing ambassador for our community.”
Emery, a 12-year-old seventh-grader at Marco Forster Middle School, is one of Salt Creek’s emerging talents. Over the last couple of seasons, he’s chalked up his fair share of contest wins, but more than that, as Diamond noted, the kid’s stoked to be living the surf life.
When asked what his favorite thing about surfing is, he succinctly replies, “Finding good waves and scoring with my friends.”
When asked where he sees surfing taking him in the next 10 years, his answer is the same.
“I hope to have a bunch of great surf trips with my friends and family in the next 10 years,” Callan said.
Every 12-year-old surfer looks up to somebody, and in the case of Callan it’s Hawaiian stylist and entertainer Mason Ho.
“He has a great attitude and always looks like he’s having fun no matter what the conditions are,” Diamond added.
The same could be said about Callan.
