As migrating gray whales begin to head north to cold-water feeding grounds for the summer, whale watching boats have been reporting sightings of pods with babies passing by our coast, some pausing in shallow water coves.
Dana Wharf Whale Watching captured this drone video of two adult whales and a baby frolicking in a cove off of Laguna Beach last week.
Dana Wharf captains expect gray whale sightings to continue through May and then after an approximately six-month hiatus, south-bound gray whales will again be spotted heading south to their calving grounds in Baja California sometime around November.
Although a variety of whale species can be seen year-round, gray whale “season” typically gives way to blue whale season, May through October.
