Lillian Boyd, Dana Point Times

The annual Dana Point Water Wars took place in the Dana Point Harbor on Fourth of July. Participants rowed, boated and paddled onto the main channel in boats ranging from small inflatables to fishing boats that were 20 feet and longer. The biggest battle happened around noon, when warriors of all ages could be seen firing water guns and lunging buckets of water at each other. Water Wars had three rules enforced by harbor patrol: 1, No water balloons; 2, Maintain a safe speed; and 3, You must have life jackets in your boat for all people, including adults. Other than that, anyone on the water—even bystanders watching from the Island Way bridge—were fair game to be targeted.
