LETTER TO THE EDITOR

The undefeated Mission Viejo High School football team set out to extend its six-game win streak in a homecoming game against Dana Hills in both team’s South Coast League opener on Oct. 9.

The Diablos, the top-ranked team in the CIF-SS West Valley Division, left no doubt as to their intentions of claiming another league title as they ran away with a dominating 77-0 victory.

Despite the final tally on the scoreboard, the game started off slow. The Dolphins opened the quarter with six consecutive three-and-outs. On the Dolphins second punt of the quarter, Mission Viejo’s Peyton Marshall blocked the kick and the Diablos recovered it for the first touchdown of the night and a 7-0 lead.

The Diablos did not let up from there. Mission Viejo would scored five more times in the first quarter, building a 42-0 lead. Both teams pulled their starters at the start of the second.

Mission Viejo quarterback Brock Johnson, despite playing only one quarter, completed 12-15 passes for 156 yards and three touchdowns. After his early substitution, the Diablos had six different players record rushing touchdowns.

Mission Viejo senior Andrew Wilk and sophomores Jacob Clark and Benn Vallier all individually ran for over 100 yards on the night. Clark led the way with a game-high two touchdowns.

Dana Hills (0-7, 0-1 league) will enter its bye week after being outscored by opponents 362-61 so far in 2015.

Mission Viejo (7-0, 1-0) has made it apparent that they intend to compete for the championship. Their remainging games will be against Tesoro (6-1), San Juan Hills (6-0), and El Toro (4-3), respectively.

“We came out here with a lot of confidence,” Mission Viejo linebacker Ryan Dove said. “We can see ourselves going undefeated in league.”
