Water Polo Notches Big Win Over El Toro
The Dana Hills boys water polo team secured a crucial South Coast League win over rival El Toro on Sept. 29. The Dolphins poured in five unanswered first-quarter goals held on to earn a 12-10 victory.
Dana Hills held an 11-4 lead after three quarters and survived a Chargers scoring barrage in the fourth quarter. El Toro outscored the Dolphins 6-1 in the fourth quarter but it was not enough.
Dana Hills was led by Jack McLaughlin’s six goals. Bennett Williams scored three and goalie Riley Zachary recorded 14 saves and four steals.
Although it is early in the season, the win puts the Dolphins (10-3, 1-0 league) at the top of the league standings. El Toro, who finished second to the Dolphins in league last year, dropped to 7-3 on the season.
Dana Hills will travel to play a league match at Tesoro on Oct. 6.
Dolphins Football Falls to Garden Grove
Garden Grove, the reigning CIF-SS Southern Division champions, shut out the visiting Dana Hills football team in a 28-0 victory on Sept. 25. Garden Grove had four different players find the end zone and held a 7-0 lead at halftime. In the third quarter, Garden Grove’s Daniel Orellana returned an interception 30 yards for a touchdown and with four seconds on the clock, quarterback Danny Avilla connected with receiver Devan Rouse for a 45-yard touchdown to take a 21-0 lead.
Dana Hills’ final nonleague game will be against Cypress at home on Oct. 2. The Dolphins (0-5) will open South Coast League play on the road against Mission Viejo on Oct. 9.
