Dana Wharf Fish Count: Warm, Clean Water Provides Bass Frenzy

Water temperatures pushed to 70 degrees, and the bass fishing frenzy continued last week at Dana Wharf Sportfishing & Whale Watching.

In his weekly report, Captain Brian Woolley said there have been a few days of good current that have cleaned up some of the lingering dirty water around the beach. The cleaner and warmer water have provided greater bass fishing days for the half-day trips.

The Dana Pride had a couple 100-plus fish trips on the same day, and the charter groups over the weekend hit their bass limits. The bass came in all sizes from the average legal weight up to some seven-pound fish.

Woolley said that sliding egg sinkers with a live sardine or anchovy have provided the best fishing. He also said the rubber lures are also pulling in plenty of bites which is a welcomed signal for the weeks to come.

Morning or afternoon, the fishing has been good. The Clemente pulled in 170 sand bass on a twilight trip last week. Half-day and three-quarter-day trips have had strong numbers along any of the kelp lines.

Over at San Clemente Island, the Fury grabbed some more yellowtail along with the bass that everyone is hooking.

Here is the latest fish count out of Dana Wharf:
