On July 16, OC Parks confirmed that the fire pits at Capistrano Beach Park are to be removed later in July. Continued coastal erosion has caused increased repair costs as well as being deemed a public safety hazard. Recently, nails and screws from wood being used as firewood in the pits has been spread throughout the beach after high-tide events.

It is not sustainable for us (financially) to have someone unbury them each time a swell washes over the pits,” an OC Parks representative confirmed via telephone on July 16.

OC Parks stated that no other Dana Point County operated beach facilities are scheduled to be removed at this time.

No official date has been set for the pits removal.
