Dana Point 5th Marine Regiment Support Group Raises $5,500 at Charity Dinner
The Dana Point 5th Marine Regiment Support Group raised $5,500 at a fundraiser dinner on March 10 at Cannons Seafood Grill, a welcome home event attended by more than 20 United States Marines and their families and more than 100 community members who wished to give thanks. Cannons owner Greg Mortimer played the gracious host by treating his guests from the 5th Marine Regiment to dinner and drinks.
“It went exceptionally well,” said group president Pete Hammer. “The number of people and the supporters who were there, even in light of the economic times, was truly amazing.”
The Dana Point 5th Marine Regiment Support Group is a “conduit” of support and good will for the South County, according to Hammer. “Our mission is very simple,” he said. “To take care of our 5th Marines and their families, whether they’re deployed or here at home with their families.”
The support group recently sent 275 care packages to Marines serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, boxes that included simple items that most living in the states would take for granted: toothpaste, lip balm, skin cream, sunscreen, foot powder, batteries and snacks, among dozens of other items. The local non-profit has sent out 540 of these packages since their inception.
The support group also pays for parties and events at Camp Pendleton including baby showers, pamper parties, Christmas celebrations and carnivals for the kids. They also help families by delivering food stuffs and perishables and with any emergencies that may arise.
