THE LATEST: Capistrano Unified School District trustees approved a budget at their December 8 meeting that puts next year’s budget at $12.5 million less than the current year’s—that is, until expected cuts are made to the current year.
The out-year budget needed to be reduced by $12.5 million, per the county’s request. CUSD had until mid-December to identify specifically what it would rely on for that amount. This is for the 2009–’10 and 2010–’11 school years, and the items on the budget were those that had been discussed at three recent budget workshops. They include a zero-salary increase, switching to online agendas, drawing down reserves, renting out a school bus, a surplus from the summer and a higher-than-expected student enrollment.
The only change trustees made to the list was to preserve the district’s Teaming for the Learning of all Children, or TLC, an intervention program that helps struggling students.
WHAT’S NEXT: Board and staff members made it clear at Tuesday’s meeting, however, that the picture could change and probably would, once Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger gives his budget report in January.
FIND OUT MORE: The budget decision was preceded by a swearing-in ceremony for the November elected trustees—this summer’s recall election replacements Ken Maddox and Sue Palazzo, and newcomers Mike Winsten and Jack Brick.
