Surf legend Dorian “Doc” Paskowitz, 91, is the scheduled guest speaker for the Dana Point Historical Society’s annual meeting January 23.

The event will begin with a potluck dinner at 6 p.m., at the Community House, 24642 San Juan Avenue, followed by a brief business meeting and then a speech by Paskowitz.

Paskowitz—an author and Stanford educated physician who gave up practicing medicine in favor of taking his large family on the road in a camper to spend their days surfing—will discuss his early memories of Dana Point and San Onofre State Beach where he, wife Juliette and their nine children established their surf camp in the early 1970s.

In 2007,  the documentary film Surfwise introduced viewers to the family’s unusual vagabond lifestyle which included no formal education for the children.  Rumors of a new movie in the works, possibly starring Sean Penn as Doc, have been circulating recently.

Attendees should bring an eight-serving potluck dish to share. Drinks will be provided.
